H.H.S. Earth Watch Patrol

East Lycoming Shopper-97/98 School Year:

In one year's time each Hughesville High School Earth Watch Patrol member spends an average of 100 hours in community service. Part of that time they are recycling mixed office waste, aluminum cans, cardboard and books at school to save dwindling land fill space and to conserve resources. They also test Muncy Creek to check for non-point source pollution in connection with the State Water Quality Monitoring Program.

In the 1996 calendar year, the students recycled three quarters of a ton of cardboard, 660 pounds of aluminum and over 9 tons of mixed office paper waste. Approximately 100 boxes of old books were saved from the landfill. Data from physical, chemical and biological testing of Muncy Creek during the last two years have consistently showed mild enrichment.

Current Earth Watch Patrol members are: Nathan Babcock, Donald Bassett, Rebekah Booth, Melissa Daly, Summer Golder, Amy Hill, Jennifer Hornberger, Kay Horner, Heather Long, Amy McCoy, Brett Miller, Charity Myers, Chad Puderbach, Todd Puderbach, David Richardson, Jill Segraves, Shelly Stackhouse, Desiree Waltz, Andrea Woodling, and Nathan Whipple.
